This 1955 Mercedes-Benz 220 is one of 1,278 Cabriolet A models bodied by Sindelfingen Karosserie between 1951 and 1955. The car is said to have been acquired by the current owner prior to 2006 and was subsequently refurbished with work involving rust repairs, refinishing the body in black, and refreshing the interior in red leather upholstery. The car is powered by a 2.2-liter inline-six mated to a column-shifted four-speed manual transmission. This example was stripped as part of the aforementioned refurbishment, receiving bodywork and rust repairs prior to an exterior repaint in black. Various trim pieces were either replaced or refinished, and exterior details include a black soft top with chrome landau bars, chrome bumpers with overriders, amber driving lamps, and a left mirror. Black 15″ steel wheels wear chrome hubcaps and are mounted with BFGoodrich Silvertown whitewall tires, while a matching spare is stored in the trunk compartment. The suspension was overhauled during the build and features double wishbones and a sway bar up front, a swing-axle setup at the rear, and replacement shocks at each corner. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel drum brakes. The reupholstered cabin has been lined with sound-deadening material and features front bucket seats along with a rear bench trimmed in red leather accompanied by color-coordinated door panels and carpets. Wood trim adorns the interior, and additional appointments include a heater, map pockets, and a Becker Mexico push-button radio. The trunk compartment houses a three-piece Karl Baisch luggage set retained via leather straps. The three-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and frames rebuilt VDO instrumentation consisting of a clock, a 160-km/h speedometer, and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 1,800 kilometers (~1,100 miles), and total mileage is unknown. The 2.2-liter M180 inline-six features a single overhead camshaft and a Solex downdraft carburetor to produce a factory-rated 80 horsepower.
