This 1950 Mercedes-Benz 170 S is one of just over 1,600 Cabriolet B four-seat convertibles manufactured during three years of production. The car is said to have been purchased in 1976 by Phoenix, Arizona, actor and broadcasting mainstay Pat McMahon, with whom it remained for 48 years before being later acquired by the selling dealer six months ago. Finished in silver over red, the car is powered by a 1,767cc L-head inline-four paired with a floor-shifted four-speed manual transmission. Equipment also includes a single Solex downdraft carburetor, coil-sprung suspension with a double-wishbone front setup and a swing-axle rear assembly, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, body-color steel wheels, and a gray convertible top. This W136 cabriolet is now offered by the seller dealer in Fenton, Missouri, with a fitted luggage set, spare brake parts, and a clean Arizona title. The 170 S model was unveiled in May 1949 at the Hannover Technical Export Fair alongside the more utilitarian 170 D as the first new passenger car models introduced by Mercedes-Benz following World War II. The 170 S rode on underpinnings derived from the 170 V, but with a more powerful variant of the engine, a coil-sprung wishbone front suspension, and a roomier body with styling based on the pre-war 230 luxury model. In addition to a four-door saloon, the 170 S was offered in both two- and four-seat cabriolet variants. This example is finished in silver, and various imperfections in the finish can be seen up close in the photo gallery below. Styling includes rear-hinged doors, bright beltline trim, chrome bumpers with rear guards, fender-mounted Bosch headlights, a fender-mounted side mirror on the driver’s side, a cowl-mounted antenna, and a gray convertible top with landau bars. The top is said to have been refreshed with replacement cloth and wooden bows in 2024. Body-color steel wheels are appointed with chrome-accented hubcaps and are wrapped in American Classic tires showing 2021 date codes, while a matching spare is housed in the trunk. Braking is handled hydraulically by drums all around. The cabin received upholstery work in 2024 and features front bucket seats trimmed in red leather as well as a rear bench that has been re-trimmed in red vinyl. Additional features include black carpeting, rubber front floor mats, wood door caps, four roll-up windows, braided leather rear grab ropes, and a Becker rotary-dial radio. The three-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and sits ahead of a wood-topped dash that houses VDO instrumentation including a 140-km/h speedometer, a clock, and combination gauges showing oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 7k kilometers (~4,500 miles), approximately 20 of which have been added under current ownership. A light underneath the combination gauge is said to be illuminated. The 1,767cc M136 inline-four is a higher-displacement derivative of the powerplant used in the 170 V and was factory rated at 52 horsepower and 82 ft-lb of torque. Features include a detachable aluminum cylinder head and a downdraft Solex carburetor. The engine was reportedly refreshed during a mechanical refurbishment performed under previous ownership. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an all-synchromesh four-speed manual transmission and a rear swing axle with a 4.375:1 ratio. Coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers are utilized as part of both the rear suspension and the double-wishbone front setup, the latter of which incorporates an anti-roll bar. The car is titled by its body number, 1811400823, and the selling dealer notes an absence of other identification numbers or tags. The trunk houses a three-piece set of fitted luggage trimmed in tan with brown plaid lining.
