This 2002 Mazda MX-5 was prepared for Spec Miata competition by two-time SCCA Spec Miata national champion Jim Drago of East Street Racing as his personal car, and won both days of the 2017 Spec Miata June Sprints. The current owner acquired the car in 2018, and it has since resided at MSR Houston until coming to the selling dealer’s location in Portland. Power is provided by an ESR-prepared 1.8L inline-four backed by an ESR-prepared 5-speed manual transmission and differential. The car is also equipped with a MoTeC C1212 digital dash with data-logger and camera systems, a Spec Miata suspension kit, an SCCA-approved front subframe reinforcement kit, and more detailed in the listing. This Spec Miata is offered on behalf of the current owner in Oregon with a spare set of wheels and tires, a new SCCA logbook, and a bill of sale. The donor car was previously salvaged and as part of the build it was stripped to bare metal, the chassis was inspected, the seam sealer was removed, and the chassis was checked and optimized per Spec Miata rules prior to being repainted in light gray. The exterior has been wrapped in a custom orange and gray East Street Racing livery, including the removable hardtop. A factory chin spoiler is fitted, and the driving light holes have been plated over. The 15″ TRMotorsport C1M wheels are fitted with new Toyo Proxes RR tires measuring 205/50, and are mounted with a set of ARP extended studs. A second set of wheels with tires are also included. Modifications include a Spec Miata suspension kit with height-adjustable coilover assemblies, as well as Whiteline offset front suspension bushings and competition suspension bushings. Brake modifications include East Street Racing-prepared calipers, stainless steel brake hoses, and PFC brake pads front and rear. The interior retains a factory dash assembly but has otherwise been stripped, exposing the gray-painted interior surfaces. The car is equipped with an East Street Racing roll cage with high-density padding, a MOMO steering wheel with NRG quick release and Miatacage hub adapter, and Miatacage kevlar door pulls. The factory gauges have been replaced with a MoTeC C1212 digital display and data-logger system, which is augmented by an AEM air:fuel gauge and Autometer ultra-lite water temperature and oil pressure gauges. The padded Kirkey Containment seat is HANS compatible and mounted with ESR adjustable mount brackets, and as well as an ESR center tunnel and floor panel which allows for a lower seat mounting position. The car is equipped with a fire suppression system, a seat-back brace, a set of Schroth harnesses and a 19-quart Cool Suit system. Other modifications include a notched center tunnel, clutch and brake pedal covers, an East Street Racing forward-mount mirror kit, vent windows, and a ballast mounting plate. Power is provided by an East Street Racing-prepared 1.8-liter inline-four, which sends power to the rear wheels via an East Street Racing-prepared 5-speed manual transmission and competition differential. Modifications and replaced components include the following: Flowed and balanced injectors Spark plugs Engine gasket kit Green air filter Competition motor mounts SD/ESR aluminum radiator w/16 psi cap Thermostat Coolant hoses Temperature sensor East Street Racing adjustable fuel pressure regulator Fuel test kit and dry-break hose Fuel filter Oil pressure sensor relocation kit Clutch assembly with balanced flywheel Clutch master cylinder Stainless steel clutch line Shifter rebuild kit New shift bushing and boots Redline MTL transmission gear oil Brake master and slave cylinders East Street Racing competition differential East Street Racing gusseted differential housing East Street Racing CV axles High amperage kill switch East Street Racing aluminum battery box The underside of the car has been refinished in gray chipcoat, and the subframes and suspension hardware were powdercoated in black. An SCCA-approved front subframe brace is installed, as are East Street Racing rear knuckles and front hubs, East Street Racing adjustable end-links, and new control arm eccentric bolts. The competition exhaust system terminates just aft of the rear subframe. The invoice for the MoTeC digital dash and data logger system is pictured above, and the car is shown in the SCCA’s Sports Car magazine in the gallery. An additional set of wheels used tires is included, as is a hard-wired Motorola radio and antenna. Filed under: eunos, mx-5, mx5, nb, nb miata
