This Chevrolet Monza race car is said to have been built by Pat Stair, driven by Carl Shafer in the 1980 season, and campaigned by Jack Sandberg, the vehicle sponsor and owner of J.R.S Racing and Metal Masters of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The car wore several liveries from 1980 until 1986 and was driven in various IMSA Camel GT division and SCCA Trans Am series events. Finished in a red and yellow #21 livery, the car is powered by a 358ci V8 linked with a T-10 four-speed manual transmission and a quick-change rear end. Additional equipment includes a vented cowl induction hood, widened bodywork, a rear spoiler, a roll cage, a Holley intake manifold, a four-barrel carburetor, custom exhaust headers, a side-outlet exhaust system, and an ATL fuel cell as well as power steering, adjustable coilovers, Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes, multi-piece 16” wheels, and Avon racing slick tires. The car was acquired by the seller in 2012 and then underwent a six-year refurbishment. Work consisted of stripping, repairing, and refinishing the body and chassis as well as installing a replacement engine, transmission, and rear axle. This Monza race car is now offered in Poughquag, New York, with with historical photos and documents and a bill of sale. The fiberglass body is fitted with a vented cowl induction hood, a steel roof, widened fiberglass bodywork, a right-side exhaust outlet, functional vents on the front fenders and rear quarter panels, and a rear spoiler. The car was repainted in the 1980 SCCA Trans Am-style red and yellow J.R.S Racing and Metal Masters of Minneapolis #21 livery during the refurbishment. Additional features include an adjustable front chin spoiler, headlamp covers, dual side mirrors, and plexiglass windows. Paint blemishes are pictured in the gallery. Gold three-piece 16″ wheels feature polished lips and are mounted with Avon racing slicks. The car has been fitted with adjustable front A-arms, boxed lower control arms, and a four-link rear suspension setup along with power rack-and-pinion steering and adjustable coilovers at each corner. Braking is handled by black-painted Wilwood calipers over ventilated discs at all four corners with an adjustable front-rear bias via a console-mounted Tilton knob. The race-prepped interior houses a black vinyl-covered aluminum racing seat with a RaceQuip five-point harness. Additional equipment includes a padded roll cage, a window net, a fire extinguisher, a multi-panel rearview mirror, a Hurst shifter, and an MSD Digital 6AL ignition system and ignition coil mounted to the right side of the dashboard. A Digital Delay toggle switch box is mounted to the left of the instrumentation, and an ATL fuel cell and Optima battery are mounted in the trunk area. The tape-wrapped steering wheel sits ahead of an AutoMeter 8k-rpm tachometer and Stewart-Warner gauges for oil pressure, water temperature, oil temperature, battery charge, and fuel level. No odometer is installed, and total mileage is unknown. The replacement 358ci V8 is said to have been built by Automotive Specialists Racing Engines of Concord, North Carolina, and features a Holley intake manifold, a four-barrel carburetor, an Adams water pump, an aluminum radiator, an electric cooling fan, MSD ignition components, and custom-fabricated exhaust headers. Power steering and oil coolers have been fitted on each side of the radiator. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a replacement T-10 four-speed manual transmission and a quick-change rear end. A board displaying historical photos and documents is included with the vehicle. Photos taken during various stages of the refurbishment process are displayed in the gallery. The car does not have a VIN or chassis number, and it does not have a title. It is being sold on a bill of sale for off-road use.
