1974 BMW Alpina

This 1974 BMW 2002tii was originally delivered to Wahl BMW in Huttental, Germany and was subsequently modified by Alpina to A4 specification. It is said to have been brought to the UK in the early 2000s, at which time it was repainted in its factory shade of Chamonix White and fitted with reproduction Alpina graphics. After being imported to the US in 2013, the car spent time in California before being acquired by the current owner and relocated to Canada in 2015. Power is supplied by a fuel-injected 2.0L inline-four mated to a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential, and additional equipment includes bolstered bucket seats, Alpina 13” wheels, Bilstein shocks, driving lights, and front and rear spoilers. Work performed in 2023 involved replacing the rear wheel bearings, suspension bushings, coolant hoses, and windshield washer pump, as well as refreshing the wiring, repairing the rear differential, and servicing the transmission. This 2002tii Alpina A4 is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner in Canada at no reserve with Alberta registration. Finished from the factory in Chamonix White, the car is said to have been repainted in the early 2000s following the completion of body repairs that involved refurbishing or replacing parts as necessary, including the inner and outer sills. Green and blue Alpina graphics were applied at that time, and additional details include front and rear spoilers, driving lights, dual side mirrors, and pop-out quarter windows. Alpina twenty-spoke 13” alloy wheels are mounted with 175/70 Michelin Energy tires. The suspension is equipped with Bilstein shocks, and stopping power is provided by disc brakes up front and drums out back. The rear wheel cylinders and brake hoses were replaced in 2022, while the rear wheel bearings were replaced in 2023, along with rubber bushings for the subframes, control arms, semi trailing arms, and sway bar. The cabin features Recaro front bucket seats and a rear bench seat trimmed in black vinyl with color-coordinated door panels and carpets. Additional appointments include a woodgrain instrument bezel, a push-button Becker AM/FM stereo, a wood shifter knob, and checkerboard-patterned Coco floor mats. A leather-wrapped Alpina steering wheel fronts a 220-km/h speedometer, a tachometer, and a combination gauge, while a trio of VDO supplementary gauges are located in the center of the dash along with a MotoMeter analog clock. The five-digit odometer shows 91k kilometers (~57k miles), approximately 5k of which have been added under current ownership. The 2.0-liter inline-four features a Kugelfischer individual-throttle-body mechanical fuel injection system as well as a revised cylinder head, an Alpina 300-degree camshaft, stainless-steel headers, and an Alpina-branded valve cover and air filter lid. The engine was reportedly overhauled by Alpina in 1981, at which time a replacement Getrag dogleg five-speed manual transmission is said to have been installed. The fuel pressure hoses were replaced in 2022 and replacement coolant hoses were installed in 2023. The seller states that work in preparation for the sale included installing Pertronix electronic ignition and replacing the fuel injection lines, ignition wires, and linkage ends. Compression and leak-down test results are presented in the gallery. The seller states that the underside was dry ice-blasted under current ownership. The differential was refreshed with replacement bearings and seals and the driveshaft center support bearing and coupler were replaced in January 2023. Copies of German registration documents dating to 1974 are provided in the gallery along with technical literature and correspondence with BMW and Alpina. The car does not have a title, as it is registered in a province that does not issue titles for vehicles. It is being sold on its registration.
