This 1934 Fiat 508S Balilla Spider Sport was acquired by Keith Teter, the former transportation design chair of the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, in 1969. A refurbishment was completed in the mid-1970s, and the car was acquired by the current owner from Mr. Teter’s family in 2000. The car is finished in yellow over black upholstery, and power comes from a replacement, overbored 995cc inline-four paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Service performed under current ownership reportedly included a carburetor rebuild and an adjustment of the brakes. This Balilla Spider Sport is now offered on dealer consignment at no reserve with spare parts, tools, literature, refurbishment notes and photos, and a clean California title. The 508S Spider was designed by Ghia and was manufactured under license in Germany, France, and Czechoslovakia in addition to Italian production. This example was built by Generalvertretung Ludwig Wilberz of Frankfurt, Germany, and was refinished in Volkswagen Rally Yellow lacquer in 1974. The louvered hood side panels were finished in acrylic enamel. Features include low-cut doors with external chrome latches, a folding windshield, and a trunk lid with a rising central tail fin. Windshield wipers are not currently installed, and paint chips and cracks are noted by the selling dealer. The body-color 17″ wire wheels wear chrome hubcaps and are mounted with BFGoodrich Reidrubber bias-ply tires. A matching spare wheel is mounted in the trunk. The cockpit features bucket seats trimmed in black upholstery with matching door panels and carpets. The driver seat is mounted forward of the passenger seat on Balilla Spider models. The three-spoke steering wheel fronts a black dash panel housing a 140-kph speedometer, an ammeter, an oil pressure gauge, an aftermarket water temperature gauge, and an Alfa Romeo-sourced fuel level gauge. The five-digit odometer is said to have been reset during the 1970s refurbishment and shows over 2,500 kilometers (~1,600 miles). Approximately 100 kilometers were added under current ownership, and total mileage is unknown. The replacement 995cc flathead inline-four was installed under previous ownership and features a Weber carburetor. The engine was rebuilt and overbored in the early 1970s before it was repainted yellow. A 12-volt electrical system is fitted, and a carburetor rebuild was performed under current ownership. Engine number 108 074147 is shown above and is listed on the title as the VIN without the leading “1”. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. Spare parts, tools, and literature are included with the sale along with notes and photos from the 1970s refurbishment.
