This 1939 Steyr 220 is one of approximately 5,900 examples manufactured by Steyr-Daimler-Puch between 1937 and 1941 and is outfitted with two-window cabriolet bodywork. The car received a refurbishment several years ago, after which it spent time in Missouri before being acquired by the selling dealer in 2021. Finished in red, it is powered by a 2,260cc OHV inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment also includes four-wheel independent suspension, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, a tan convertible top, seating for five trimmed in tan leather, and a rectangular Jaeger instrument cluster. This Steyr 220 was highlighted on BaT in March 2014 is now offered as a running project in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with a clean Missouri title. After originating as a branch of an Austrian armaments company that was founded in 1864, Steyr diversified into the manufacture of automobiles toward the end of World War I. In 1934 the company merged with Austro-Daimler-Puch to form the conglomerate Steyr-Daimler-Puch, which produced various passenger cars, trucks, buses, and offroad vehicles through the beginning of its dissolution in 1987. The 220 model was introduced in 1937 as a larger-displacement evolution of the six-cylinder 120 that debuted three years prior. The 220 model featured a 2,840mm-wheelbase chassis and was available with both open and closed bodywork, including three different two-door cabriolet variants. This example’s two-window cabriolet body wears an older repaint in red, and various imperfections in the finish and trim are shown in the photo and video galleries below. Styling includes a centrally hinged hood with horizontal vent accents, triple vent flaps rearward of each front fender, trafficators, black rear stone guards, a tan convertible top, and roll-up windows with flip-up side seals. The windows do not currently roll up. Beige wheels are accented with red pinstripes and bright hubcaps and are mounted with 5.00-15 Garfield whitewall tires. A matching spare is secured in a recessed compartment at the rear of the car. Stopping is handled by hydraulic drum brakes at each corner. The cabin is trimmed in tan leather over the front bucket seats and rear bench, with matching upholstery over the door panels. Additional interior features include brown carpeting, semicircular door pockets, bright grab handles on the backs of the front seats, a lockable glovebox, and a tilt-out windshield. The red three-spoke steering wheel wears a bright horn ring and sits ahead of a rectangular Jaeger instrument panel with a 160-km/h speedometer, a clock, and gauges monitoring fuel level and amperage. Additional gauges at the center of the dash monitor oil pressure and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 32k kilometers (~20k miles), with total mileage unknown. One of the pull knobs to the right of the instrument cluster has broken off. The 2,260cc inline-six produced a factory-rated 55 horsepower when new and features overhead valves and a single Solex side-draft carburetor. The fuel system was refreshed following the selling dealer’s acquisition to return the car to a running state, with work including the addition of an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and an inline fuel filter as well as a rebuild of the upper portion of the carburetor. The selling dealer states that the car will require further sorting to return to a drivable state. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. Four-wheel independent suspension comprises a swing-axle rear with quarter-elliptical leaf springs and a front setup with upper and lower transverse leaf springs and lever-arm shock absorbers. The appearance of corrosion is noted on various underside components. The car is titled using number CC3479S, which is shown stamped on the engine block above.
