1932 Marmon

This 1932 Marmon Sixteen features LeBaron-built close-coupled sedan bodywork and was purchased by the current owner as a project in 2001 before being disassembled. The body was stripped and coated in primer, while the doors, fenders, and hood wear faded green paint. The chassis remains fitted with a replacement 491ci V16 and a three-speed manual transmission, and additional work performed under current ownership involved overhauling the engine, refinishing the bright trim, and refurbishing the instrument panel and gauges. This Marmon Sixteen project is now offered at no reserve by the seller on behalf of the owner in North Fort Myers, Florida, with spare parts, a Marmon Speedway Certificate, refurbishment records, a description of work performed by the owner, and a clean Michigan title. The Indiana-based Marmon Motor Company began development of its V16 engine in 1926, with the Sixteen models entering production in April 1931. It remained Marmon’s range-topping offering until they ceased building passenger cars in 1933. The LeBaron-built Type #149 close-coupled sedan bodywork on this example was stripped and sprayed with primer under current ownership. The hood panels, doors, and trunk lid wear faded green paint and can be seen in the gallery below along with re-finished brightwork and removed glass. The cloth top panel will require replacement. The Sixteen rode on a 145″ wheelbase and featured semi-elliptical leaf springs at all four corners. A set of five 16″ wire wheels are included in the sale, and they were laced and trued in August 2010. The cabin was stripped under current ownership, and the removed door panels and seats can be seen in the gallery. The instrumental panel and gauges were refurbished under current ownership and include a 120-mph AC reverse-sweep speedometer as well as gauges for oil pressure water temperature, amperage, and fuel level. Two Jaeger eight-day clocks are included in the sale along with a replacement clock dial. Total chassis mileage is unknown. The replacement 491ci V16 was bored 0.060″ over in 2003 and subsequently overhauled by Fort Meyers Automotive in Florida at a cost of more than $20k in May 2020. It features alloy construction, a 45° bank angle, a duplex downdraft carburetor, and a 6.00:1 compression ratio. The seller states that the engine has not been run in approximately two years, and it remains fitted in the chassis with a three-speed manual transmission. Engine stamping 16-538 matches the Marmon Speedway Certificate below. The Marmon Speedway Certificate is shown above and displays engine and chassis serial numbers. The seller states that they cannot locate a serial number on the chassis, and the Michigan title lists a VIN of 16149811.
