1940 Buick Super

This 1940 Buick Series 50 Super Estate was refurbished in California in the late 1990s and is finished in brown with wood paneling over brown vinyl upholstery. Power is from a 248ci inline-eight paired with a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission, and features include a black vinyl roof covering, tinted windows, front auxiliary lamps, and steel wheels with chrome hubcaps and trim rings. The car was acquired by the selling dealer in early 2022, and subsequent work has reportedly included valve and brake adjustments, an oil change, and replacement of the fuel filters and the tires. This Model 59 Buick woody is now offered in Rhode Island by the Massachusetts-licensed selling dealer with service records dating back to the mid-1990s and a clean Florida title. Buick produced 495 wood-sided Super Estate wagons for the 1940 model year, with bodies crafted by Biehl Auto Body Works of West Reading, Pennsylvania. Originally finished in Royal Maroon (544), this example is said to have been repainted its current shade of brown during the aforementioned 1990s refurbishment, and the wood bodywork was refinished at that time. Exterior details include a black vinyl roof covering, tinted windows, chrome bumpers and side mirrors, a single rear taillight, and front auxiliary lamps. Brown-finished 16″ steel wheels wear chrome hubcaps and trim rings and are mounted with Coker Classic whitewall tires that were reportedly installed by the seller. The four-wheel drum brakes have been adjusted and the front shocks replaced in preparation for the sale. Helper springs are said to have been installed on the rear axle. The cabin houses two rows of bench seats trimmed in brown vinyl upholstery, and color-coordinated piping is found on the gray carpeting. Details include engine-turned accents on the dashboard and an analog clock. The Sonomatic AM radio is inoperable. A banjo-style steering wheel frames a 110-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows less than 10 miles, and actual mileage is unknown. The seller states that the odometer does not work but the speedometer does. Cracks are present on the steering wheel. The 248ci Dynaflash inline-eight is topped by a single carburetor with an oil-bath air cleaner. Work conducted under current ownership has reportedly included a tune-up, an oil change, valve adjustment, and replacement of the fuel filters.
