This 1941 Pontiac Custom Torpedo features mahogany and ash station wagon bodywork from the Hercules Body Company of Evansville, Indiana, and spent time in Connecticut before being refurbished by BTO Autoworks of Poughkeepsie, New York. The work was completed in 2004, and the car was purchased by the seller in 2007. It is finished in blue over a tan interior, and power comes from a 239ci inline-six paired with a three-speed manual transmission. Features include an AM radio, a heater, and a cigar lighter. A new fuel pump and six-volt battery were installed in 2020. This Torpedo woodie wagon is now offered with refurbishment photos, factory literature, partial service records, and a clean Kansas title in the seller’s name. The Harley Earl-designed Custom Torpedo was offered in four body styles. This station wagon was delivered from the factory in Streamline Gray (4104) and was repainted brown during previous ownership before bodywork and a repaint in Tropical Blue, a 1941 Pontiac color, was performed by BTO Autoworks. The mahogany and ash body was reportedly refurbished by a furniture company at the same time, and a replacement rear corner post, rear fender rails, and rear window upper frame rails were installed along with several new roof slats and new textured black vinyl roof covering. The body-color 16″ steel wheels feature chrome hubcaps and trim rings and are mounted with Firestone bias-ply whitewall tires. The Series 24 Torpedo rode on a 122″ wheelbase and featured an independent “Knee-Action” front suspension and a live rear axle with semi-elliptical springs and shock absorbers. Braking is handled by hydraulic drums at all four corners. The fuel tank was replaced in 2016. The cabin is trimmed in tan leather with matching carpets, and exposed wood is visible on the door panels, pillars, and roof. Amenities include a steel dash with painted “birdseye maple” finish, an AM radio, and a cigar lighter. The electric clock and heater are inoperable. The ivory-colored three-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and frames an inoperable 100-mph speedometer and gauges for voltage, fuel level, oil pressure, and water temperature. Just over 38k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer. Total mileage is unknown. The 239ci inline-six features a Carter downdraft carburetor and was rated at 90 horsepower when new. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission. A new fuel pump and six-volt battery were installed in 2020. A start-up video is viewable here.
