218 Bel Meadow Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90017
$21,000
Make: Mercury
Model: Mercury Eight
Year: 1950

This 1950 Mercury Eight 0CM woodie wagon is said to have been purchased out of Arizona by the seller’s father in 1986 and subsequently spent time in Wisconsin before being relocated to Florida. In 1988, the car was refurbished with work that reportedly involved replacing the wood framing and installing wood panels in place of the woodgrain appliqué. The vehicle has been repainted in green and also has three rows of green-upholstered seats plus a 255ci flathead V8 paired with a three-speed manual transmission. Other equipment includes body-color 15″ steel wheels, chrome wheel covers, whitewall tires, a split tailgate, a tailgate-mounted spare-tire assembly, sliding rear windows, a spotlight, and a push-button AM radio. This Mercury woodie wagon is now offered with refurbishment photos and records, manufacturer’s literature, and a clean Florida title in the seller’s name. Mercury built 1,746 station wagons for 1950, and they were crafted of steel body panels with woodgrain veneers applied to the doors, quarter panels, and tailgate. This car was refurbished in 1988, and work involved replacing the factory bird’s-eye maple framing and also fitting wood paneling in place of the previously installed darker veneers. The exposed steel body panels were refinished in a color intended to mimic Maywood Green Metallic. The car has dual side mirrors, and a spotlight has been added to the driver-side A-pillar. Dual taillamps are affixed to the split tailgate with hinged mounts, and the lights can be repositioned with supporting rods when the tailgate is lowered. Body-color 15″ steel wheels feature polished covers and are mounted with 215/75 Coker Classic whitewall tires. A spare wheel and tire are stored beneath a hard cover attached to the tailgate. The car rides on an independent front suspension setup along with rear leaf springs, and braking is provided by drums at all four corners. The cabin features a split front bench seat and two rear benches trimmed in two-tone green upholstery. Matching materials line the ceiling, and the doors, tailgate, and side panels are adorned with wood. Equipment includes a push-button AM radio along with a Merco-Therm ventilation and heating system. The two-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and sits ahead of a 110-mph speedometer, auxiliary gauges, an analog clock, and a column-mounted shifter. The five-digit odometer shows 59k miles, approximately 1k of which have been added by the seller. The 255ci Mercury flathead V8 features a single downdraft carburetor with an offset oil-bath air cleaner. The battery was new in 2023. Power is delivered to rear wheels via a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission. Corrosion is noted on underbody components. Refurbishment photos are presented in the gallery below.
