This 1951 Mercury woodie wagon is one of 3,812 built for the model’s final year and is said to have spent time in California before being refurbished under previous ownership and purchased by the seller through an August 2019 BaT Auction. The car has been repainted in black with refinished wood paneling over a red leather interior, and power is from a 255ci flathead V8 paired with a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission. Modifications include a 12-volt electrical system with an alternator, an updated radiator with an electric fan, an aftermarket temperature gauge, an auxiliary audio input, and more. Electrical work and an oil change have been carried out under current ownership. This Mercury wagon is offered in California with an owner’s manual, a period sales brochure, and a clean Montana title in the name of the seller’s LLC. The body features a steel structure and roof, with wood panels forming the door and rear quarter panel skins. The previous refurbishment included a repaint in black and refinishing of the wood trim. The condition of the finish and brightwork is shown up close in the gallery below. Black 15″ steel wheels wear beauty rings, Mercury-branded hubcaps, and 215/75 Coker Classic whitewall tires. The cargo area behind the third-row seats is accessible via a split-folding tailgate. Taillamps feature hinged mounts and are repositioned with pushrods when the tailgate is lowered. The seats and headliner are trimmed in red leather accented by black carpets with red piping as well as a combination of genuine and faux wood trim on the dash and door panels. The period AM radio has reportedly been modified with a cable to connect an iPod, phone, or other device. The two-spoke steering wheel features a horn ring and frames instrumentation including a speedometer, supplementary gauges, and a five-digit odometer showing 15k miles. Approximately 300 miles have been added by the seller, and total mileage is unknown. The factory temperature gauge is not functional, and an aftermarket version has been added under the dash. The 255.4ci flathead V8 features induction from a single downdraft carburetor with an offset factory air cleaner. The electrical system has been converted to 12 volts, and an alternator and more efficient radiator fan have been added along with an electric radiator fan. An oil change was carried out following the seller’s purchase. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission. The exhaust system merges to a single pipe forward of the gearbox and splits into dual outlets near the rear end. Filed under: woodie, woody
