This 1954 Packard Caribbean convertible is finished in two-tone white and green over matching leather upholstery, and power comes from a 359ci straight-eight paired with an Ultramatic automatic transmission. Equipment includes power steering, power-assisted drum brakes, 15″ wire wheels, a Continental kit, a power-operated white soft top, a hood scoop, power windows, a power-adjustable front bench seat, a heater, and an AM radio. This second-year Caribbean was purchased by the current owner in 2012, and it is now offered on dealer consignment with literature, a green tonneau cover, and a Texas title. The Caribbean was based on the Pan-American concept car of 1952 and was introduced to compete against the likes of the Cadillac Eldorado, Buick Skylark, and Oldsmobile Fiesta. Entering production in 1953, Caribbean bodies were sent from Detroit to the Mitchell-Bentley Corporation of Ionia, Michigan, for modifications including a hood scoop, chrome beltline and rocker-panel trim, quad horizontal taillights with “fishtail” rear fender treatments, a Continental-style spare wheel in a body-color cover, and enlarged wheel openings with chrome trim. For 1954, the second-year Model 5478 Caribbean saw a price increase from $5,210 to $6,100 and featured standard power steering, power-assisted “Easamatic” drum brakes, a heater and windshield defroster, a power-adjustable front seat, and power windows. A total of 400 examples were produced for the model year. This example was repainted in two-tone white and green under previous ownership. It features a replacement power-operated white soft top as well as a retractable antenna, a driver-side mirror, reverse lights, and revised-for-1954 rear wheel arches. Imperfections in the finish can be seen in the gallery. Chrome-finished 15″ wire wheels wear Packard center caps and are mounted with American Classic whitewall radial tires. A matching spare wheel with a Firestone bias-ply tire is located under a steel two-tone cover out back. The Caribbean rode on a 122″ wheelbase and featured a coil-sprung independent suspension up front and a live rear axle with semi-elliptical leaf springs. The cabin features front and rear bench seats that were retrimmed in white and green leather under previous ownership as well as green wool carpets that were also installed at that time. Additional equipment includes a push-button AM radio, a locking glovebox drawer, and an under-dash tissue holder. The ivory-color two-spoke steering wheel frames a textured instrument panel housing a 110-mph speedometer, gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature, and a clock. The five-digit odometer shows 34k miles, approximately 300 of which were added by the current owner. The 359ci straight-eight was introduced for the Caribbean in 1954 and features nine main bearings and a Carter four-barrel carburetor. Output was factory rated at 212 horsepower. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an Ultramatic automatic transmission that is said to have been rebuilt under previous ownership. The Texas title carries “Bonded Title” and “VIN Certification Waived” remarks.
