This 1958 Devin SS Bodied Vintage Racer utilizes a fiberglass body on a custom chassis and was sold on BaT in December 2014. It has been driven a few hundred miles over the past two years to keep the vehicle in good working order. The 331ci small-block V8, which is equipped with dual 4-barrel carburetors and sends power thru a Super T10 4-speed manual gearbox to a solid rear. Braking is handled by Wilwood disc brakes at all four corners, and Halibrand wheels are wrapped in Dunlop rubber. Blacksmith Garage, did not race the car and purchased it to enjoy while driving around Pine View Lake, Utah and to serve as eye candy for their showroom. The car is sold with logbooks and a clean Utah title. Devin Cars, a company founded by American Bill Devin, produced racing cars and bodies throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s. The Devin SS was the range-topping model, designed for big-bore competition in the SCCA C-Modified class and competing against the top brass of the era, namely Ferrari and Maserati. The one-piece SS body is comprised of hand-laid fiberglass with fixed cockpit sides and integrated seats. Built 15 years ago by vintage racer Scott Zerby, this example was campaigned in multiple events including the US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen and Kohler International Challenge at Road America. Included with the sale is an SVRA logbook from this period. Headlights and taillights are currently wired. The seller reached out to Zerby who explained to the seller that the body came from a collector by the name of Harold Pace. At the time, the body was sitting on an old Austin Healey frame and had sat as someone’s project who never got too far into it. There are no serial numbers on the fiberglass but the body matched the type and color of bodies made by Devin and had the original hood and trunk. Scott Zerby built and set the car up to compete in the SVRA group 4 pre-1960 class. The body is in used-race condition with the fiberglass showing a few scuffs and crazing. Halibrand wheels are wrapped in Dunlop CR65 tires and four-wheel disc brakes were sourced from Wilwood. Under the skin is a custom-built tube chassis that uses Austin-Healey 100 front suspension and a multilink solid rear. Five-inch springs are adjustable with NASCAR-style jacks, and damping is provided by AFCO adjustable racing shocks. The cockpit features integrated fiberglass bucket seats, carpet, and a full dashboard. Period Stewart-Warner gauges are used with fluid temperature, oil pressure, and charging voltage displayed on the center portion. Safety equipment includes five-point race harnesses and a removable steering wheel makes getting in over the fixed cabin side easier. A fire suppression system comes installed. Power comes from a 331 cubic-inch small block Chevy V8 estimated around 450 horsepower that is mounted with a front motor plate and wears period-style Corvette valve covers. Dual four-barrel carburetors are fitted, and the tube headers feed into straight side-pipes. Cooling is handled by an aluminum radiator with an electric fan. A Super T10 4-speed manual gearbox sends power through a custom Ford-based 9” adjustable J-Bar rear end. Tube headers lead to the straight side pipe exhaust with an awesome V8 exhaust note. The seller will be performing a complete fluid change and installing a fresh set of plugs prior to the sale. Dual Holley fuel pumps draw from a 24 gallon ATL fuel cell, and a fluid cooler aids the rear differential. The car was previously sold and purchased on BaT on a Bill of Sale as the car had never been titled. However, Blacksmith Garage has completed the titling process and the car now has a clean Utah title. Headlights and taillights are currently wired but the selling dealer notes that turn signals, a horn, and silencers would need to be installed in order to make it street legal in Utah. There may be other requirements depending on the state where the buyer resides. https://youtu.be/9L8s6zsQjrU
