This 1961 BMW 700 Sport Coupe is said to have been delivered to Hoffman Motors in New York state in December 1962 and later given to Elsco Corp. in Jacksonville, Florida where it was reportedly used as a race car. The car was acquired in 2011 by the seller, who commissioned a refurbishment in 2014 at Racecraft in Woodinville, Washington, that included paint and bodywork along with suspension and electrical work. The car is powered by a 734cc opposed twin that was overhauled in 2021 by Terry Tinney Performance Motors in Livermore, California. Features include a four-speed transaxle, a roll cage, a fuel cell, a fire suppression system, 13″ Panasport wheels, OMP bucket seats, and a RaceQuip seatbelt harness. This 700 Sport Coupe race car is now offered at no reserve in Oregon for off-road use only with a spare engine and transaxle, a set of rain tires mounted on Panasport wheels, spare parts, service records, and a bill of sale. The 700 was the marque’s first monocoque offering and this example was refinished in gray with black accents in 2014. Features include a dual-exit exhaust system, headlights, taillights, a front tow hook, rubber hood latches, a front BMW roundel, and brightwork trim. The bumpers have been removed. Silver 13″ Panasport wheels are mounted with 4.50″ Dunlop Racing 204 tires. Stopping power is provided by drums at all four corners. The suspension was overhauled and features modified rear control arms with spherical bearings. The cabin features a tubular roll cage, OMP bucket seats with suede insets, and a six-point RaceQuip seatbelt harness. The dashboard, door panel, and quarter panels have been modified and are finished in black. Additional equipment includes a gated shifter and a rearview panel mirror. The leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel frames a set of aftermarket VDO instruments consisting of a 120-mph speedometer and a 10k-rpm tachometer as well as auxiliary gauges for oil pressure, oil temperature, and voltage. The five-digit odometer shows 1,200 miles, though total mileage is unknown. The 734cc air-cooled flat-twin was overhauled in 2021 by Terry Tinney Performance Motors. A dynamometer test sheet is provided in the gallery and shows 65 horsepower at 6,500-rpm and 58 bl-ft of torque at 5,300-rpm. The engine features: JE Pistons with 10.7:1 compression ratio Martini big valve head Elgin camshaft and re-profiled lifters Custom solid copper head and cylinder base gaskets Dell’Orto SS1 36mm carburetors Custom Carrillo connecting rods Rebuilt crankshaft by Scottie’s Workshop in Murphys, California Custom Ferrea valves, springs, retainers, and keepers Custom Dennis Etcheverry two-into-two stainless exhaust system Power is sent to the rear wheels via a single-disc dry clutch and a four-speed manual transaxle that was reportedly overhauled under current ownership. Photos depicting the various stages of the refurbishment are presented in the gallery. The car does not have a title or registration and will convey on a bill of sale only.
