This 1964 MG MGB race car was originally built by Huffaker Engineering in the late 1970s. It was raced by several owners in various liveries throughout the 80s, spent the 90s in a collection, and was eventually purchased by the seller in 2012. The car was then returned to Huffaker, and a subsequent rebuild included fitting a 1.8-liter inline-four, refurbishing the bodywork and interior, and overhauling the brakes, suspension, wiring harness, and Quaife Dog Box. Races following the rebuild include the 2013 thru 2017 Monterey Motorsports Reunion and all CSRG events including the 2022 season finale at Thunderhill Raceway in November. Features include a four-speed Quaife dog box, a limited-slip differential, 14″ Jongbloed Racing wheels, a single-hoop roll structure, a Vintage 31 bucket seat with a six-point racing harness, a fuel cell, a fire suppression system, twin SU carburetors, and a Ron Davis aluminum radiator. This MGB race car is now offered in California with racing log books, refurbishment photos, a collection of spares, service receipts, and a bill of sale. The car was originally built by Huffaker Engineering for driver Don Martin in 1978. It was subsequently purchased by Hap Waldrop in 1985, painted black, and raced throughout the late 1980s. IMSA champion Roger Mandeville reportedly owned the car between 1989 and 2002. Eddie Beal reportedly purchased the MGB in 2002, and it was restored by Hap Waldrop between 2004 and 2005. Beal raced the car from 2006-2008. The seller purchased the car in 2012, and a 2013 refurbishment at Huffaker Engineering included stripping the paint, repairing the bodywork, replacing the fiberglass fender flares, and refinishing the car in silver. The #9 livery was modeled after the car’s late-70s appearance, and additional features include front and rear rubber bumpers, a low-profile windscreen, a trunk-mounted fuel cell, and cooling ducts in place of the headlights. The hood was replaced in September 2022, the shocks were replaced in preparation for the sale, and photos of the refurbishment are included in the gallery. Three-piece 14″ Jongbloed Racing wheels are mounted with 205/55 Hoosier R7 slicks, and a matching spare set of wheels and tires is included in the sale. The seller states that the suspension is equipped with 700lb front coil springs, de-arched rear leaf springs, a Huffaker front sway bar, and a Huffaker-designed rear suspension. The front disc brakes are equipped with drilled slotted rotors, and service in September 2022 included rebuilding the front calipers and replacing the pads. The rear drum brakes were adjusted and the fluid was flushed in November 2022. The cockpit features a Vintage 31 bucket seat, RaceTech six-point racing harness, single-hoop roll structure, fire-suppression system, and a windshield-mounted rearview mirror. The leather-wrapped Grant steering wheel fronts a custom instrument panel including a central tachometer flanked by gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and oil temperature. An AEM air-fuel ratio gauge is mounted to the windshield support. There is no odometer, and total mileage is unknown. The 1.8-liter inline-four was built by Huffaker Engineering in March 2020 using the following components: Marine billet stroker crankshaft Steel main caps Custom Carrillo connecting rods Custom JE pistons Huffaker 258/262 camshaft Competition valvetrain components Double-row timing chain Factory high ratio rocker assembly Jennings billet distributor MSD ignition Twin 1 3/4″ SU carburetors Huffaker competition oil pan Huffaker exhaust header Romac harmonic balancer Wasp high torque starter Aluminum radiator and electric fan Service in November 2022 included a valve job and replacing the head gasket, intake gaskets, and spark plugs. The seller states that the engine has approximately 20 hours since the rebuild. The rod bearings are said to have been checked by Huffaker Engineering in February 2022. The four-speed Quaife dog-box transmission was rebuilt in September 2022, a Tilton clutch was also fitted and the flywheel was resurfaced. The car is equipped with a Huffaker hybrid rear axle and a Tran-X limited-slip differential with a 4.55:1 final drive ratio. The SCCA log book dates back to 1986, and a CSRG log book, refurbishment photos, a selection of spares, and service receipts will also accompany the car.
