This sports racing special is said to have been custom-built to Can-Am specification by Minnesota SCCA driver Jack C. Baker circa 1966 using a chassis identified as a Quasar and power from a mid-mounted Holman & Moody-prepared 427ci Ford V8. After changing hands in the 1970s, the car was campaigned in SCCA competition and received bodywork modifications including the addition of a shovel-type nose panel. It was sold via Can-Am Cars Ltd. proprietor Chuck Haines to its current owner 30 years ago and subsequently received a repaint of its fiberglass body panels in white. The overbored Ford FE V8 was overhauled in the 2000s and is topped by quadruple dual-throat Weber carburetors. Additional equipment includes a Colotti five-speed manual transaxle, four-wheel disc brakes, adjustable coilover suspension, gold-painted staggered-width 15” wheels, a roll bar, and a driver-side bucket seat upholstered in black. This Quasar special is now offered on dealer consignment in Trout Valley, Illinois, with a specification sheet from Holman & Moody, historical photos and notes, an SCCA logbook covering races between 1977 and 1988, and a bill of sale. Best known for his “Black Jack” Jaguar Special in the early 1960s, Jack Baker is said to have turned his attention to constructing this car in the mid-1960s to keep pace with contemporary rear-engined racers. The chassis is described in notes from previous ownership as a Quasar and features a chromoly steel tube frame with a 93” wheelbase and an aluminum outer skin around the cockpit. Fiberglass spider bodywork incorporates a McLaren rear clip and was fitted with its current shovel-style nose circa the late 1970s in place of its original rounded front profile. Previously finished in orange, the body was finished in white with green when purchased by its current owner, who had it repainted in solid white in the early 1990s. Features include a polished aluminum rear wing, fender and tail-panel louvers, polished aluminum side pods, and a roll bar integrated into the chassis. Gold-painted steel wheels are mounted with Avon tires measuring 11.0/23.5-15 up front and 16.0/27.0-15 at the rear. Stopping is handled by four-wheel disc brakes with Kelsey Hayes four-piston calipers and dual Wildwood ¾” master cylinders, the latter of which were installed in 2016. The right-hand-drive cockpit houses two-place seating with black upholstery over the driver’s bucket seat. Features include a three-spoke steering wheel, a right-hand shifter, and an electrical cutoff switch. Instrumentation to the driver’s left includes an 8k-rpm tachometer and gauges monitoring voltage, oil pressure, fuel pressure, oil temperature, and coolant temperature. The car is not equipped with an odometer, and total mileage is unknown. According to the selling dealer, the car has not been driven under current ownership. The 435ci Ford FE V8 is said to have been prepared by Holman & Moody in the 1960s and features quadruple Weber carburetors atop an aluminum intake manifold, dry-sump lubrication, and four-into-one exhaust headers. An overhaul performed by R.P. Mack Motorsports in Spring Lake, Michigan, in 2003 included machining of the block and cylinder heads and magnafluxing of the crankshaft. Components installed during the overhaul included 4.280”-bore JE pistons, forged H-beam connecting rods, main and rod bearings, Ferrea stainless-steel valves, a COMP Cams camshaft, and aluminum rocker rollers. Service in 2016 included the installation of a Howe aluminum radiator, a Powermaster gear-reduction starter, and Schoenfeld exhaust merge collectors as well as the replacement of various hoses, tubing, and fittings. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Colotti T50 five-speed manual transaxle. A Wilwood ¾” clutch master cylinder and a Girling ¾” clutch slave cylinder were installed in 2016. Suspension incorporates double unequal A-arms up front and inverted lower wishbones, single upper links, twin trailing arms, and custom uprights at the rear. Adjustable coilover shock absorbers and sway bars are utilized at front and rear. A specification sheet sent from Holman & Moody to Jack Baker in 1967 is shown above and lists an output of 580 horsepower while also noting the Colotti transaxle. Additional documentation shown in the photo gallery below includes a classified advertisement placed by Baker, an SCCA logbook listing races from the late 70s and late 80s, handwritten notes listing previous owners, a specification sheet provided by the previous owner, a 1993 Vintage Motorsport article referencing the car, and a Colotti T50 shift diagram. Handwritten notes in the gallery suggest that the car was utilized in the 1969 Paul Newman film Winning. The car is pictured above with its previous front configuration, and photos showing the car with the updated nose in the same livery are viewable in the gallery below. Also provided are photos of the car in its subsequent white and green livery. Invoices covering the 2000s engine rebuild and 2016 service are also presented below. According to the selling dealer, the chassis is not marked with an identification number.
