A great many Scouts have been modified over the years, but this Florida-based 1978 International Harvester Scout II 4×4 is said to be mechanically stock, from the powertrain to the suspension. And apart from an exterior respray, it’s also said by the seller to be in original condition. “It is excellent — not restored, but very well maintained,” he notes, adding that the Scout is well-equipped and powered by the optional 345 V8.

“It has what it takes to get your there.” That was the pitch for the 1978 International Harvester Scout II — an Indiana-built SUV with a removable roof that was renowned for its off-road capability.

  • Power comes from a 345-cu.in. OHV V8, the biggest of three engines offered for the year.
  • New, it was rated at 163 horsepower and 292 lb-ft of torque.
  • A Chrysler-supplied TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission backs the V8.
  • Driveline details also included a Dana Spicer Model 20 two-speed transfer case.
  • All the powertrain elements are said to be in good-operating condition.
  • Photos show the original radiator has been replaced with an aluminum version.
  • According to the seller, the exterior has had a single respray of the original Siam Yellow color.
  • The roof rack is a factory part.
  • The Scout is equipped with a factory CB radio and an AM radio.
  • The finish appears in good condition, with a few apparent touch-ups on the tailgate.
  • The heavy-duty diamond steel plate rear bumper also appears to have been repainted silver.
  • The cabin appears in good original condition, with minor wear in the upholstery and trim.
  • Rather than carpet the floor wears a brown vinyl cover.
  • Headliner is factory original.
  • Air conditioning is among the vehicle’s amenities, along with power steering and power brakes.
  • The rig has factory cruise control, too.
  • Cooper Cobra tires with a reported 200 miles are mounted on aftermarket aluminum wheels.
  • The seller notes that the dual exhausts wear new mufflers.
  • He says a new aluminum fuel tank was installed.
  • An owner’s manual, accessory catalog and service manuals are included.
  • Factory original roll bar.
  • Factory original spare tire, never used.
  • Black convertible top.
  • A few small holes and splits are visible in the vinyl-and-cloth front seat cover.
  • A bubble is seen in the paint on the front lower driver’s-side fender.
  • Built in Fort Wayne, Indiana, this Scout II is said to be in largely original condition.
  • It is powered by the original 345 V8 engine, backed by a three-speed automatic transmission.
  • The driveline also includes the stock Spicer two-speed transfer case.
  • According to the seller the body was repainted the original color.
  • The cabin appears in good condition, with some wear on the trim and upholstery.

The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean Florida title in his name. Comparatively rare in its stock condition, this 1978 International Harvester Scout II 4×4 is said to be in great original shape. “It is in excellent condition — not restored, but very well maintained,” says the seller.
