This AAR Eagle was built in January 1983 and attempted to qualify for the 1984 Indianapolis 500 with driver Dick Ferguson and the Hess Racing team. It later participated in CART series races at Elkhart Lake, Mid-Ohio, and Laguna Seca before it was donated to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation in 1988 and subsequently incorporated into the IMS Museum collection, where it spent the past decade in their climate-controlled storage facility. The car is finished in white and red with a period livery over a red single-piece racing seat and retains its turbocharged 161ci Cosworth V8 and a Hewland five-speed transaxle case. The powerplant is a “show engine,” and the internals of the engine and transmission were removed prior to donation to the museum. This AAR Eagle is now offered by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation in Indiana with a bill of sale. All American Racers was founded by Dan Gurney and Carroll Shelby in 1965. This example features fiberglass bodywork finished in white and red with a period Hess Racing livery. Features include a fixed rear wing, a left-side mirror, a plexiglass windscreen, and a NACA duct on the nose. An AAR chassis tag showing a January 22, 1983 build date is affixed to the front cowl and can be seen in the gallery. The 15″ BBS multi-piece wheels are mounted with staggered Goodyear Eagle Speedway Special slicks. Braking is handled by cross-drilled discs at all four corners. The cockpit features a fixed-back seat trimmed in red upholstery with a Simpson five-point harness. The three-spoke steering wheel fronts a manifold pressure gauge, a Stewart-Warner 12k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for oil temperature, oil pressure, and water temperature. Total mileage is unknown. The 161ci Cosworth V8 features an IHI turbocharger and is linked to a Hewland five-speed transaxle case. The engine and transmission are showpieces, and their internals were removed prior to donation to the museum. A replacement engine and transmission will be required prior to use. Located inside the famed 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval, the IMS Museum is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that relies on the support of visitors, members, donors, and corporate partners to make possible their daily operations, exhibits, restoration and preservation initiatives, and educational programming.
