This 1985 BMW 535i was acquired by the seller in 1989 and has since been modified with an M535i-style body kit, along with the interior and drivetrain from a 1988 BMW M5. The car is finished in Cosmos Blue Metallic over black leather and is powered by a 3.5L S38 inline-six mated with a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Equipment includes 17″ M System II wheels with “throwing star” covers, Bilstein shocks, lowering springs, cross-drilled brake rotors, French-market headlights, a sunroof, a rear spoiler, fog lights, heated power-adjustable front sport seats, air conditioning, a cassette stereo, and a CD changer. This E28 is now offered with factory literature, service records, spare parts, and British Columbia registration in the seller’s name. Finished from the factory in Cosmos Blue Metallic (185), the car was fitted with an M535i body kit before being repainted in 2001 and was refinished again in 2010. French-market headlights with wipers and yellow high beam lenses have been added, and additional equipment includes a sunroof, tinted windows, a rear spoiler, fog lights, and clear front turn signal lenses. The left rear quarter panel was repaired following an accident in 1990, rust repair was performed on the lower left wheel opening and door in 1998, and the seller states the driver’s door was hyper-extended and repaired under current ownership. The right front frame rail was repaired in 1993 and the left shock tower was repaired in 2001. There is a dent in the right rear door and scuffs on the front air dam. The 17″ M System II wheels feature “throwing star” covers and are mounted with Pirelli P Zero Rosso tires that measure 225/45 up front and 245/40 out back. Braking is handled by E32 front and E34 rear disc brakes with ABS, stainless-steel lines, and cross-drilled rotors at all four corners. Bilstein shocks and lowering springs have been added, along with front and rear strut tower braces. The steering box was reportedly rebuilt in 2020. Interior components were sourced from the donor E28 M5, including the heated power-adjustable black leather front sport seats and matching rear bench. A short shift kit was added, and amenities include an onboard computer, cruise control, power windows, and a cassette stereo wired to a 6-disc CD changer housed in the trunk. The air conditioning system has been converted to R134a. The pedal box was reportedly replaced in 2019. The M-Tech II steering wheel frames a gauge cluster sourced from the donor M5, including a 280-km/h speedometer and a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline. The six-digit odometer shows 321k kilometers (~200k miles), though total mileage is unknown. The 3.5-liter S38B35 inline-six and five-speed manual transmission were installed in 2005, and a limited-slip differential with 3.73:1 gearing was added in 2000. According to the seller, the top end of the engine was rebuilt in 2011, while the exhaust system, engine mounts, oil pan gasket, and rear main seal were replaced in 2019. The cylinder head gasket and fan clutch are said to have been replaced in 2021, and an oil change was performed in 2023. Compression test readings are shown in the gallery. Various spare parts are included with the car, as shown in the gallery below. The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists history in British Columbia from the first entry in 1993.
