This 1988 Volkswagen Vanagon GL Syncro Westfalia is a pop-top camper that was overhauled mechanically and modified by Stephan’s Auto Haus of Sacramento, California in October 2019, which included rebuilding and installing a turbocharged 1.8-liter inline-four that is paired with a five-speed manual transaxle with a crawler gear, an all-wheel-drive system, and a locking rear differential. The camper has been refinished in blue over gray upholstery, the suspension and steering systems were refurbished, and a Propex heater and a refrigerator system were installed. Additional features include 16″ wheels, front disc brakes, a pop-up tent, a Bluetooth-capable stereo, a swiveling driver seat, folding rear seats, and a kitchenette pop-out tables, a stovetop, a sink, and a ScanGauge engine monitoring system. The bus spent time in Canada before it relocated to Oregon and later California, and the selling dealer acquired it in February 2020. This T3 Syncro camper is now offered in Idaho with refurbishment records, an accident-free Carfax report, and a clean California title. The van was recently refinished in its current blue shade to address corrosion and cracking body filler, according to the selling dealer. The paintwork and exterior trim are shown up close in the photo gallery below. Seven-spoke 16″ wheels sourced from a newer Passat model are mounted with 225/60 Michelin Premier A/S tires. Braking is provided by front discs and rear drums, and work in 2019 included flushing the braking system, installing Bilstein shocks, and replacing the springs, tie-rod ends, and suspension and steering bushings. The pop-up roof tent features window screens in the front and sides and is shown in its open and closed positions in the gallery below. The interior features seats trimmed in gray cloth with patterned inserts, and the driver’s seat swivels. Equipment includes an Alpine stereo with Bluetooth connectivity, a digital ScanGuage module mounted to the steering column, and an aftermarket center console. The two-spoke steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation that includes a 100-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer with inset coolant temperature and fuel-level gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 35k miles, though true mileage is unknown. The rear area features a bench seat, pop-out tables, a replacement carpet kit, and a kitchenette with white cabinets and countertops that lift to expose a sink and propane stovetop. A TruckFridge refrigerator has been installed along with a Propex heater and a 1,100-watt inverter. The rear seat folds flat for sleeping space. Power comes from a turbocharged 1.8-liter inline-four that was sourced from a Jetta model and installed by Stephan’s Auto Haus of Sacramento, California in 2019. Additional work performed at that time included modification of the engine control unit and instrument cluster, installation of an oil cooler and SPAL cooling fan, and replacement of the following: Oxygen and crank-position sensors Timing belt and cover Water pump, thermostat, and radiator Drive belt and pulley tensioner Mass airflow sensor Oxygen sensor Coolant and fuel hoses Various hardware Exhaust system Flywheel Engine mounts Auxiliary batteries Ignition components Heat shielding Alternator Power is delivered to all four wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle with a low-ratio gear marked “L” on the shifter and a locking rear differential. The shifter bushings have been replaced along with the differential lock actuator and front driveshafts, and a 0.82 fourth gearset was installed. Additional photos of the underside are presented in the gallery below. Stickers from the California Bureau of Automotive Repair and Stephan’s Auto Haus are affixed in the engine bay. A 13-page from Stephan’s Auto Haus dated 2019 is provided in the gallery, and lists refurbishment and modification work performed that totals more than $47,500. The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists registration activity in Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Oregon, and California from its first entry in September 1994. A potential odometer rollback is listed in 2016.
