This Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet Monte Carlo (chassis #2421) was driven by Jeff Gordon in five NASCAR Winston Cup Series races during the 1996 season and in another four races in Gordon’s 1997 championship-winning campaign. In those nine short-track events, Gordon scored three victories and seven top-five finishes. Hendrick Motorsports last used the car for testing in 1999, and it was refurbished by Rhine Enterprise in Denver, North Carolina in 2009 prior to the seller’s acquisition about ten years ago. Refurbishment work included installation of the current Hendrick-sourced 358ci V8 and a Tex Racing four-speed manual transmission as well as preparations to ready the car for use on short tracks and road courses. This Monte Carlo race car is now offered in Arizona with a set of replacement decals, a spare racing seat, refurbishment receipts and photos, Hendrick Motorsports certificates of authenticity and notes, and a bill of sale. Chassis #2421—nicknamed “Brewser” by the race team—is finished in a rainbow-style DuPont Automotive Finishes livery over a Hendrick Motorsports tube-frame chassis. Bodywork includes front brake-duct inlets, cooling vents, longitudinal stabilizing strips on the roof and over the back window, a roof flap, and an adjustable spoiler on the rear deck. Decals mimic the headlights from a contemporary production Monte Carlo. Black 15″ Aero wheels feature yellow pinstriping and are mounted with yellow-letter Goodyear Eagle racing slicks. Wilwood disc brakes are at all four corners. The interior features an integrated roll cage fitted with padding, as well as a window net and a ButlerBuilt racing seat used by Jeff Gordon along with a Simpson five-point harness that expired in 2015; a Joie of Seating seat for a 6’2″, 220-pound driver is also included in the sale. MSD ignition boxes are mounted atop the transmission tunnel. The dashboard is signed by driver Jeff Gordon and his longtime crew chief, Ray Evernham. A padded three-spoke steering wheel equipped with a quick-release hub fronts a dash panel fitted with toggle switches for various functions. A large AutoMeter 10k-rpm tachometer is complemented by smaller VDO auxiliary gauges. Power comes from a Hendrick Motorsports engine block identified as JRH-049. The 358ci SB2 V8 benefits from a Holley 830-cfm NASCAR carburetor, a carbon-fiber air-cleaner cover, and Hendrick Motorsports valve covers. Other equipment includes power steering, an oil cooler, stainless-steel braided fuel lines, a replacement fuel cell, and dual exhaust pipes that exit on the driver side of the vehicle. The seller states that the engine is track-prepped and has been operated for less than one hour since being rebuilt during the 2009 refurbishment. Pages of refurbishment invoices from Rhine Enterprise are provided in the photo gallery below. A Tex Racing T101 four-speed manual transmission sends power to a solid rear axle, and the clutch was replaced during the refurbishment. Additional photos showing the suspension, chassis, and underbody are presented in the gallery. A handwritten mileage log chronicles chassis #2421’s racing and testing history. The car was driven in the following NASCAR Winston Cup races, all with Jeff Gordon behind the wheel: April 14, 1996 – North Wilkesboro Speedway – Finished 2nd April 21, 1996 – Martinsville Speedway – Finished 3rd July 14, 1996 – New Hampshire International Speedway – Finished 34th September 22, 1996 – Martinsville Speedway – Finished 1st September 29, 1996 – North Wilkesboro Speedway – Finished 1st March 2, 1997 – Richmond International Raceway – Finished 4th April 20, 1997 – Martinsville Speedway – Finished 1st July 13, 1997 – New Hampshire International Speedway – Finished 23rd September 29, 1997 – Martinsville Speedway – Finished 4th During the 1996 and 1997 seasons, Gordon compiled a total of 20 victories and 43 top-five finishes. He won the driver’s championship in 1997 and finished second in 1996. A certificate of authenticity from Hendrick Motorsports for car #2421 is shown above. A similar certificate from 2010 indicates that the vehicle’s current engine—JRH-049—was used in race cars driven by Gordon as well as Hendrick teammate Jimmie Johnson. ESPN footage of the 1996 running of the Tyson Holly Farms 400 at North Wilkesboro Speedway is presented above. The event marked this car’s second victory as well as the final Cup race at the North Carolina 5/8-mile track. Ray Evernham is shown going over his notes on the car’s specific setup for the same race with Jeff Gordon and other TV commentators in this May 2020 clip from NASCAR on Fox. A walk-around video of the car is provided below.
