Model: BMW E9 Coupe

This BMW E9 coupe is said to have begun life as a BMW Motorsport body-in-white that was purchased by Rug Cunningham, race car driver and owner of Cunningham BMW in El Cajon, California, from Vasek Polak of Hermosa Beach. Chassis 2275994 was reportedly acquired by the seller from Cunningham’s widow in 2007 and underwent a multi-year race car build that was completed in 2017. The car is finished in black with BMW Motorsport stripes and Alpina livery, and power comes from a 3.6-liter M49/3 inline-six mated to a five-speed manual transmission with a dogleg first gear. Equipment includes a modified S38 cylinder head, Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, MSD ignition, a triple-disc clutch, an ATL fuel cell, a BMW Motorsport exhaust system, upgraded four-wheel disc brakes with floating rotors, 16″ BBS center-lock wheels, front and rear spoilers, boxed and vented fiberglass fenders, a roll cage, a fire-suppression system, an OMP racing seat, a Coolshirt system, and a Sparco steering wheel. This 3.5 CSL–style race car is now offered in San Anselmo, California, with spare parts, build photos and records, a BMW CCA logbook, and a bill of sale. The car was reportedly delivered from BMW Motorsport as a body-in-white and is said to have been painted in black with red, purple, and blue BMW Motorsport stripes under current ownership by German Motors Collision Center of San Francisco, California. It wears a livery in tribute to the #42 car driven by Harald Grohs, Sam Posey, and Baron Hughes de Fierlandt at the 1976 24 Hours of Le Mans. Additional Alpina livery is present on the front end, tail, and windscreen. Further equipment includes front, roof-mounted, and rear spoilers as well as yellow H4 headlights, boxed and vented fiberglass fenders, rubber front fender air guides, driver-side electrical cut-off and fire-suppression controls, Vitaloni side-view mirrors, and a NACA duct on the right quarter window. Damage on the left-rear wheel arch can be seen in the gallery below. Silver 16″ three-piece BBS wheels feature center-lock hubs and polished lips, and they are mounted with Avon racing slicks. The suspension is said to utilize period BMW Motorsport components with adjustable dampers. Stopping power is provided by ATE front calipers and AP Racing rear units over cryo-treated floating rotors at all four corners. The cockpit features an OMP Racing fixed-back seat with a Schroth Racing harness as well as a roll cage that was reportedly fabricated by Roger Hamlin of Sonoma, California. Additional equipment includes a fire-suppression system, an electrical cutoff switch, a Coolshirt system, and an Allstar Performance window net. The Alcantara-wrapped Sparco steering wheel fronts a VDO 10k-rpm tachometer and combination gauges, while readouts for voltage and transmission and differential fluid temperatures are mounted in the center of the dashboard. There is no odometer, and the seller is said to have driven the car at Sonoma Raceway for approximately 25 minutes in 2017. Total mileage is unknown. The 3.6-liter BMW M49/3 was reportedly built by Bill Watson at Road Rockets of Sonoma, California, and features JE pistons, Total Seal rings, Pauter titanium connecting rods, and a modified S38 cylinder head. A strut tower bar spans the engine bay, and additional equipment includes Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, a BMW Motorsport-AC Schnitzer slide-throttle setup, MSD ignition, a modified water pump, a lightweight radiator, and a dry-sump lubrication system with a 12-quart trunk-mounted tank. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Getrag close-ratio five-speed manual transmission with a dogleg first gear and an oil cooler. A 5.5″ triple-disc clutch has been fitted along with a custom flywheel, a trunk-mounted ATL fuel cell, and a BMW Motorsport dual three-into-one exhaust system. Photos taking before and during the build can be viewed in the gallery. Chassis stamping 2275994 can be seen above. The car does not have a title, and it is being sold for off-road use only on a bill of sale.
