1962 Buick Skylark: a compact car in luxury trim. nted black with the iconic white hardtop and with the Buick signature “port -a-vents” in the front fenders, few will mistake this for anything other than a Buick. To many, the most exciting facet of this jewel is the 215 CID engine, which was one of the most advanced V-8’s of the era, with its all aluminum block and heads; which shaved hundreds of pounds off the front end weight, thereby improving both its nimble response and gas mileage.
The engine was professionally re-built at 100,000 miles, according to the previous owner. The odometer now reads 12,361 miles but is beyond its mechanical limit, i.e., the actual mileage is closer to 112361. May 23,2024 compression testing gave these results: #1 = 138 psi; #2 = 130; #3 = 138; #4 = 138; #5 = 135; #6 = 138; #7 = 133; #8 = 131. All readings are considered “very good”, are within 10% of their average, without adding motor oil to the cylinders and taken after ten minutes of engine idling. Power steering and reduced gross weight make for effortless and nimble handling. Other recent work includes the installation of a rrel lebrock carb, new battery, new rims, “hub caps”, US yal red line radial tires, radiator hoses and fluids, and a new WIX oil filter. For those who like to control the power, there’s a factory installed g- rner four speed transmission with floor shifting. It has recently been fine tuned for rapid and accurate gear selection. The new tachometer, discretely mounted on the dash, aids gear selection points. Once under way, the exhaust note is sweet and throaty; not too loud, but with a distinctive “presence”.
The interior carries forward the nostalgic Buick elegance with d vinyl bucket seats in front, bench in back, matching red steering wheel, and like-new roof liner. Carpets have been tastefully replaced with new matching threads, now protected with optional matching “Buick” floor mats. The dash, too, speaks of another era: one with more driver involvement. All gauges, indicator lights, and radio work to keep the driver informed and entertained, now with up-to-date music.
A new Buick vice ual and the original Owner’s truction ok included, as are the original rims and wheel covers, plus mounted and balanced newer tires, and a fitted car cover. photographs.
