This 1961 Volkswagen Type 2 is a 15-Window Bus featuring a walk-through cabin and finished in Pearl White and Turquoise Green. The van was reportedly sold new in California, where it remained until moving to Washington State 2009 and later Oklahoma. A cosmetic refurbishment was performed in the 1980s, and a 1,915cc flat-four and 4-speed Freeway Flyer gearbox have been installed more recently. Other features included lowered suspension, 4-wheel disc brakes, widened steel wheels, period accessories, and further upgrades. New whitewall tires and a pair of Weber carburetors from CB Performance were installed in 2018, and recent service also included a tune-up, valve adjustment, and oil change. This split-window Bus is offered by the selling dealer in Tennessee with 20 years of service records and clean Oklahoma title. The bus was originally finished in Sealing Wax Red according to the selling dealer, who notes that it was repainted in Turquoise Green and Pearl White in the 1980s. The body features pop-out safari windows and Deluxe trim, and is also equipped with a set of Bosch European headlights and a Westfalia-style luggage rack. A walk-around video is shown above, and a second can be viewed here. Widened 15″ steel wheels from DeepVeez come wrapped in a set of whitewall tires that were installed in 2018. Ride height has been lowered with a post-1967 narrowed front axle beam and adjustable rear swing-axle plates. The walk-through cabin is trimmed in Como Green upholstery and equipped with a center row of seating and a carpeted rear compartment, which also contains a period Thermos cooler. Photos of the sheet metal floors have been provided in the gallery below. A Blaupunkt radio, chrome ashtray, fuel gauge, and factory clock reside in the Pearl White dash, while accessory ambulance fans have been installed on the ceiling but are not currently wired. Approximately 5k miles are shown on the 5-digit odometer, with actual mileage unknown. Beneath the body-colored cooling shroud is 1,915cc flat-four that was built by Franklin’s VW Werks in Kent, Washington and received a new set of dual 40mm Webers from CB Performance in 2018. The engine features a 95-amp alternator, Engle camshaft, electronic ignition, full-flow oil filter, deep sump, and ceramic coated headers and muffler. A video of the engine running is shown above. A tune-up, valve adjustment, and oil change were performed at the time of the carburetor installation. A 4-speed Freeway Flyer transaxle transmits power to the rear wheels and was rebuilt approximately six years and 300 miles ago according to the selling dealer. Four-wheel disc brakes from a later-model T3 replace the factory drums, and the braking system features a dual-circuit master cylinder and braided stainless hoses. Additional photos of the undercarriage are provided in the gallery. Receipts from the last 20 years of service, maintenance, and upgrades are included in the sale. Photos of the factory M-Plate and chassis number are provided below. Filed under: vw
