1961 Volkswagen Type 2 23-Window Deluxe Split-Window Bus

This 1961 Volkswagen Type 2 is a 23-window Deluxe “Samba” example that reportedly underwent a cosmetic and mechanical refurbishment performed by Silver Lining Auto Restoration of Silverton, Oregon, after being acquired by the seller in 2015. The bus is finished in Palm and Sand Green over tan leather upholstery, and power is provided by a replacement 1,776cc air-cooled flat-four mated to a four-speed Freeway Flyer manual transaxle. Additional features include chrome-clad 16” Fuchs-style wheels, Wilwood disc brakes, a retractable cloth sunroof, safari windows, an air suspension, three bench seats, dual Weber carburetors, and a 12-volt electrical conversion. This 23-window Microbus is now offered with a clean California title in the seller’s name. The vehicle was delivered new in Sealing Wax Red (L53) with Beige Grey (L472) upper portions, and was reportedly taken to bare metal before being refinished in Palm and Sand Green. Equipment includes a retractable cloth sunroof, red accent striping, dual side mirrors, chrome trim, sealed-beam headlamps, and Sigla glass. Chrome-finished 16” Fuchs-style wheels feature Porsche center caps and are mounted with Yokohama S-Drive tires showing 2016 date codes. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel Wilwood disc brakes with cross-drilled rotors and black-finished calipers, and an air suspension system has been fitted. The cabin features three bench seats which were reupholstered in tan leather accented by dark brown piping with matching door panels and a light green dashboard. Interior features include an analog clock, pop-out windows, a cargo basket, and an air-ride suspension controller mounted to the dashboard. The seller reports that Dynamat insulation has been installed. A two-spoke steering wheel with a Wolfsburg-crest horn button frames a 70-mph VDO speedometer. The mechanical odometer shows 914 miles, approximately 800 of which were added during current ownership. Total chassis mileage is unknown. A replacement 1,776cc flat-four was installed during the refurbishment and features dual Weber carburetors and a 12-volt electrical system. An oil change was performed in May 2021. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed Freeway Flyer manual transaxle.
