1972 DeTomaso Pantera Coupe w/mid-mounted 351ci Ford Cleveland V8
This early production 1972 DeTomaso Pantera is a rare and highly desirable example, showcasing a rich history of meticulous care and low usage. With a single-family ownership spanning 28 years, it has been preserved in climate-controlled conditions and driven sparingly, logging less than 950 miles since its full restoration in the mid-1990s.
Originally purchased in 1993 by the current owner’s late uncle, this Pantera underwent an extensive restoration completed in 1994 which included an exterior color change from Yellow to Black, a complete engine, transmission, drivetrain rebuild, brake restoration and suspension refresh. Since then, it has been cherished, stored in a heated garage and rarely driven except for sunny days. The current owner acquired the car in 2019 after his uncle passed and continued its legacy of preservation by conducting a meticulous revamp which included replacement of engine oil, coolant, transmission service, brake fluid, safety inspection, complete wheel restoration and new tires.
Design and Features
The Pantera’s design was penned by Tom Tjaarda at Carrozzeria Ghia, while its steel monocoque chassis was crafted under the expertise of former Lamborghini engineer Giampaolo Dallara. This “Pre-L” example retains its original split bumpers, pop-up headlights, mesh grilles, and a quad-tipped ANSA exhaust. Originally finished in yellow, the car was refinished in black during the restoration, and the paint, undercarriage, and interior remain in showroom condition.
Powertrain and Mechanical Highlights
The heart of this Pantera is a mid-mounted 351ci Ford Cleveland V8, paired with a five-speed ZF manual transaxle. The engine delivers 330bhp at 5400rpm and 314 lb-ft of torque, enhanced by a Holley carburetor, an Edelbrock RPM intake manifold, and an MSD ignition system.
