This 1973 Volkswagen Type 2 was acquired by the selling dealer in Brazil and subsequently imported to the United States in February 2022. The Brazilian-built bus was converted to a 23-window model as part of a refurbishment completed in 2022 that also included rebuilding the 1.5-liter flat-four and the four-speed manual transaxle as well as overhauling the suspension, steering, braking, and electrical systems. The body is finished in two-tone Lotus White and black over a red interior, and equipment includes red steel wheels, chrome VW hubcaps, a retractable vinyl roof, a side ladder, dual side mirrors, safari-style front windows, and dual roof racks with wood slats as well as three rows of bench seating, an overhead ventilation console, and seat belts for nine seating positions. This Type 2 23-window conversion is now offered with a tool kit and a Georgia registration document. The refurbishment is said to have included repainting the body in Volkswagen Lotus White and black. Other features include two-tone body-color bumpers and bright trim as well as chrome door handles and side mirrors, safari-style flip-up front windows, pop-out side windows, a retractable vinyl roof, dual roof racks with wood slats, and a side ladder with wood steps. Red-painted steel wheels wear chrome VW hubcaps and trim rings and are wrapped in Nexen white-stripe tires. The selling dealer reports that the suspension, steering, and braking systems were overhauled as part of the refurbishment. The nine-passenger cabin is said to have been re-trimmed during the refurbishment and features three rows of bench seating upholstered in two-tone red vinyl, which extends to the side panels and door panels. The middle bench can be folded and is mounted with a chrome grab bar. Other features include black carpets, a dashboard-mounted vase, an overhead ventilation console, a second-row padded bulkhead, and seat belts for nine seating positions. The white two-spoke steering wheel frames a 160-km/h speedometer, and the dashboard also houses a fuel-level gauge. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 13 kilometers (~8 miles), and total mileage is unknown. The 1.5L air-cooled flat-four features red accents and was reportedly rebuilt as part of the refurbishment, at which time the carburetor, ignition coil, spark plugs, spark plug wires, voltage regulator, and wiring harness were replaced. The selling dealer also notes that a graduated crank pulley has been installed along with adjustable tensioner and alternator pulleys, and that the generator has been replaced with an alternator. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle that is said to have been rebuilt as part of the refurbishment. Belly pans have also been added, and additional photos of the underside are provided in the gallery. Filed under: bus, kombi, vw
