This 1978 Volkswagen Type 2 is a Westfalia pop-top Campmobile and is one of approximately 1,100 Champagne Edition II examples that were produced for the 1978 model year. It is finished in Pastel White and Agate Brown over camping brown beige plaid upholstery and is powered by an air-cooled 1,970cc flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes 14″ steel wheels, front disc brakes, an analog clock, a 12-volt charging outlet, a cassette stereo, jalousie windows, a folding rear bench, a sleeping loft, privacy curtains, a refrigerator, a sink, a two-burner stovetop, an auxiliary battery, and a shore-power connection port. The bus was sold new by Jack Hathaway Volkswagen of San Luis Obispo, California, and acquired by the seller from the initial owner’s estate in 2019. This Type 2 Westfalia is now offered in San Diego, California, with manufacturer’s literature, a rear mosquito net, a warranty voucher, service records, and a clean South Dakota title in the seller’s name. The bus left the factory finished in Pastel White (L90D) and Agate Brown (L86Z) and received a repaint in 2020. At that time the window seals were exchanged and the chrome bumpers were replaced with white-painted units from Wolfsburg West. Exterior elements include a rear-hinged Westfalia pop-up roof, jalousie windows, a water inlet, a shore-power connection, and crescent-shaped air intakes. Steel 14″ wheels wear chrome VW-stamped hubcaps and are mounted with 185-series Hankook Vantara LT tires. Stopping power is provided by front disc and rear drum brakes. The forward cabin features a brown dashboard, carpet, and door panels as well as a pair of bucket seats retrimmed in camping brown beige plaid upholstery. Attachment points for a table are positioned at the center of the dashboard, while mounting brackets for a child’s cot are located on the A and B pillars. Additional interior elements include front shoulder belts, hand crank windows, a 12-volt charging outlet, and a cassette stereo. The two-spoke steering wheel frames a 90-mph speedometer, an analog clock, a fuel level gauge, and warning lights. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 40k miles, approximately 3k of which have been added under current ownership. A right-side sliding door opens to reveal the rear cabin, which is equipped with a bench seat that folds into a bed as well as a pop-up tent with a bed platform and a zip-open window. Additional appointments include an auxiliary battery, a sink, a refrigerator, a two-burner gas stovetop, a fold-out table, storage cabinets, privacy curtains, a residential-style power outlet, and a padded seat with storage. There is a tear in the front of the pop-top canvas. The air-cooled 1,970cc flat-four was factory equipped with hydraulic lifters and Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection. A MagnaFlow catalytic converter has been fitted, additional work performed under current ownership is said to have included rebuilding the EGR valve and replacing the starter, fuel pump relay, fuel filter, and battery. Power is sent to the wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle. The clutch and axles were reportedly replaced under current ownership. The van failed its most recent California emissions test in 2023, though the seller notes a CARB-approved MagnaFlow catalyst has been installed.
